The best smart home devices for Alexa, and the Echo that runs them

Alexa works with an enormous range of devices, which is its strength and its trap: plenty of them only work with Alexa. Favor Matter where you can, so the house is not locked in if the household changes its mind.

The best Alexa setup is an Echo as the controller plus Matter devices wherever possible. Start with the Echo Show 8 in the kitchen, add Matter plugs, and put the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro at the door.

  • The 8.7-inch screen is the size where a recipe can be followed from across the counter, which is the job the 5.5-inch Show 5 struggles with.
  • Amazon lists a built-in smart home hub, so Alexa devices can be set up and controlled from the screen. The listing does not say which radios it carries, so do not count on it as a Zigbee or Thread hub until you have checked.
  • Camera and microphones have an off button on the device, and the camera auto-frames on video calls, which is what makes a hallway placement work.

Skip this ifIt is an Alexa device first. Google Home and Apple Home cannot use it as a controller, so a mixed household gets a nice screen and nothing else.

  • The head-to-toe aspect ratio is the one that shows the parcel on the doorstep rather than the top of the delivery driver's head.
  • 3D motion detection cuts down the 'a car drove past' notifications that make people turn alerts off entirely.
  • Battery means no electrician, which is the actual barrier for most renters and flats.

Skip this ifVideo history needs a Ring subscription. If recurring fees are a dealbreaker, look at a doorbell with local storage.

Echo as the hub: what it can coordinate

Amazon describes the 2025 Echo Show 8 as having a built-in smart home hub, but its listing does not name the radios. Eve's Amazon listing for its Thread plug names several Echo models as compatible hubs. In practice, check your own Echo in the Alexa app before buying Thread or Zigbee devices that depend on it.

Amazon's Echo Hub, a wall-mounted control panel, is on the list for the next round of listing checks.

Alexa-only is fine, if you mean it

The Amazon Smart Plug and Amazon Smart Thermostat work only with Alexa. That is a reasonable choice for a household that is certain about its platform, and both are simple to live with. If there is any chance of an iPhone or Android-first person moving in, the Matter alternatives on each category page cost little more and keep the door open.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need an Echo to use Alexa smart home devices?
No, the Alexa phone app can control them. An Echo adds voice control in the room and, on some models, hub features for devices that need them.
Do Matter devices work with Alexa?
Yes. Alexa supports Matter, so a Matter plug or lock can be added to Alexa and to other platforms at the same time.
Which video doorbell works best with Alexa?
Ring, which Amazon owns. The Ring Battery Doorbell Pro is the pick on this site for doors without wiring.
