Smart home hubs: the three worth buying, and when to skip one
A hub is the box that lets low-power devices talk to your phone. Wi-Fi gadgets never need one. Thread and Zigbee devices always do, and a surprising number of homes already have one plugged in behind the TV.

The Aqara Hub M3 is the best smart home hub for a mixed household, because it is a Thread border router, Zigbee coordinator and Matter controller in one box. Buy it after your first sensors, not before your first plug.

Three thousand integrations means the oddball device — the Chinese air purifier, the solar inverter, the car — usually already has a community integration.
Nothing leaves the house unless you tell it to, which is a different privacy posture from every cloud platform here.
Thread and Zigbee need a USB dongle on top; budget for that rather than discovering it after delivery.
Skip this ifThere is a real learning curve and nobody to call. If you want it to work on Sunday afternoon without reading a forum, buy the SmartThings Station.
Before buying any hub, look behind the TV and on the kitchen counter. A Thread border router is the piece most Matter devices quietly depend on, and several everyday products are one.
Apple TV 4K (4th generation) — Apple's listing names Thread in its connectivity and describes it as a home hub for the Home app. Apple households with one of these need no extra box for Thread devices.
Many Echo speakers and displays: Eve's own Amazon listing names several Echo models as hubs that work with its Thread plug. Check your model in the Alexa app before buying a separate hub.
A HomePod mini or a Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) also plays this role.
If one of these is already in the house, the case for a dedicated hub shrinks to Zigbee: sensors, valves and the cheap gear that Thread has not replaced yet.
Two cheaper and two harder alternatives
Aqara Hub M100 — a USB-powered Matter controller and Thread border router. Aqara's listing caps it at 20 Aqara Zigbee and 20 Thread devices and rules out third-party Zigbee. The low-cost way into Thread rather than a whole-house hub.
Hubitat Elevation C-8 Pro — local-first, with Z-Wave as well as Zigbee. The answer when SmartThings feels too cloud-bound and Home Assistant feels like a second job.
Neither replaces the M3 for a household that wants every platform to see the same devices. Both are reasonable if you already know your platform and just need the radios.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Do I need a hub for Matter devices?
Matter over Wi-Fi devices, such as most Matter plugs, need no hub. Matter over Thread devices need a Thread border router, which can be a hub, an Apple TV 4K, a HomePod mini or a compatible Echo or Nest display.
What is the difference between a hub and a bridge?
A bridge usually serves one brand's devices, like the Hue Bridge for Hue bulbs. A hub coordinates devices from many brands and often runs automations itself. The M3 and SmartThings Station are hubs; the Lutron and Hue boxes are bridges.
Will my devices stop working if the hub dies?
Devices paired to that hub stop responding until it is replaced or they are re-paired to another one. That is the trade for local control, and the reason to buy a hub from a company with a long support record.
