Three smart home setups that hold together, by platform

A smart home setup is a set of devices that agree on who is in charge. Most frustration comes from three apps each believing they run the hallway light. These three setups each have one boss.

The best smart home setup starts from the phone most people in the house carry. Mixed homes build on a Matter hub such as the Aqara Hub M3, Alexa homes on Echo devices, and Apple homes on an Apple TV or HomePod that doubles as a Thread border router.

Setup 1: the mixed household

Someone has an iPhone, someone has a Pixel, and nobody wants to give up their app. Matter is the answer: pair each device once to the hub, then share it to every platform.

WaterAqara Smart Valve Controller T1ZigbeeMatter via Aqara hubJoins the M3 over Zigbee and closes on an Aqara leak sensor.

Setup 2: the Alexa household

Everyone already talks to Alexa, and the household is happy to stay there. Echo devices are the controllers; the rest can be Alexa-first without regret.

Setup 3: the Apple household

Everyone carries an iPhone. Apple Home is the boss, Thread is the network, and the home hub is a device you may already own.

What every good setup shares

One hub of record. Pair each device to one hub or app first, then share it outward through Matter. Pairing the same plug separately to three apps is how automations start fighting.

Local where it counts. Lights, locks and water should run without the internet. Cameras and voice can live in the cloud; they need it anyway.

A dumb fallback. Every smart light still has a switch that works, and every smart lock still takes a key. When something breaks at 2 am, the fallback is what keeps the house usable.

Names a guest would understand. "Kitchen ceiling" and "Hall lamp" beat "Bulb 3". Voice control depends on it.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does a whole smart home setup cost?
It depends almost entirely on locks, cameras and vacuums. A starter setup of plugs, sensors and a speaker is inexpensive; each category page links to live prices rather than quoting numbers that go stale.
Can I mix Alexa, Google and Apple in one house?
Yes, through Matter. Pair devices to one hub, then share them to the other platforms. Devices without Matter stay on the platform they were built for.
Should I use Home Assistant for my setup?
If you enjoy tinkering and want full local control, it is the most capable hub. If you want things to work without learning a system, the setups above are simpler.
