Best smart speakers and displays for running a smart home
A speaker in a smart home is a light switch you talk to. A display is the same thing with a camera feed and a recipe on it. Sound quality matters less than which platform it answers to.

The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) is the best smart speaker for most homes starting out, because it is the cheapest way to find out whether you use voice control at all. Add an Echo Show 8 where a screen will be read.

The 8.7-inch screen is the size where a recipe can be followed from across the counter, which is the job the 5.5-inch Show 5 struggles with.
Amazon lists a built-in smart home hub, so Alexa devices can be set up and controlled from the screen. The listing does not say which radios it carries, so do not count on it as a Zigbee or Thread hub until you have checked.
Camera and microphones have an off button on the device, and the camera auto-frames on video calls, which is what makes a hallway placement work.
Skip this ifIt is an Alexa device first. Google Home and Apple Home cannot use it as a controller, so a mixed household gets a nice screen and nothing else.
This is not a verdict on Google or Apple speakers. Google sells its Nest speakers and displays mainly through its own store, and the only Nest Hub listings on Amazon at the time of writing came from third-party sellers at well above Google's price. Rather than send you to a marked-up listing, this page sticks to what Amazon itself sells. Apple's HomePod mini is on the list for the next round of listing checks.
If your household runs on Google or Apple, the platform pages say which of their own speakers matter and why: Google Home and Apple Home.
One accessory that changes how often a display gets used
Display stand — Amazon's own stand for the 3rd-gen Show 5. It tilts the screen toward you and adds a 7.5 W USB-C port for a phone or earbuds, per the listing.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Is a smart display better than a smart speaker?
Only where the screen gets read. In a kitchen or hallway a display shows recipes, timers and camera feeds at a glance. In a bedroom or bathroom a speaker does the same voice jobs for less, and without a camera.
Can an Echo control Google Home or Apple Home devices?
Not directly. An Echo controls devices added to Alexa. A Matter device can be added to Alexa and to Google Home or Apple Home at the same time, which is the cleanest way to run a mixed household.
Does the Echo Show 8 replace a smart home hub?
Amazon describes it as having a built-in smart home hub, but the listing does not name the radios. Treat it as an Alexa controller with a screen, and confirm Zigbee or Thread support for your model before relying on it as a hub.
